Description:

Sodium Hydroxide Solution 500ml
A 0.1N Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) Solution is a standardized solution with a concentration of 0.1 Normal (N), equivalent to 0.1 Molar (M) for NaOH. Normality accounts for the reactive capacity of a solute, and since NaOH dissociates completely into hydroxide ions (OH⁻), its normality and molarity are numerically equal.

This Merck solution is prepared with precision, ensuring consistency and reliability for laboratory and analytical applications.

Preparation Details:

  • Concentration: 0.1 N (0.1 equivalents of NaOH per liter of solution).
  • Molecular Weight of NaOH: 40 g/mol.
  • Amount of NaOH for Preparation:
    • For 1 liter of 0.1 N solution: Amount of NaOH (g)=Normality (N)×Molecular Weight (g/mol)×Volume (L)\text{Amount of NaOH (g)} = \text{Normality (N)} \times \text{Molecular Weight (g/mol)} \times \text{Volume (L)} 0.1×40×1=4 grams of NaOH0.1 \times 40 \times 1 = 4 \text{ grams of NaOH}

Steps to prepare (Lab Reference):

  1. Weigh 4 grams of solid NaOH.
  2. Dissolve the NaOH in a small amount of distilled water while stirring. (Caution: Dissolution is exothermic).
  3. Transfer the solution into a 1-liter volumetric flask.
  4. Add distilled water up to the 1-liter mark and mix thoroughly.

Applications:

  • Titrations: Neutralization of acids during acid-base titrations.
  • Standardization: For calibrating acidic solutions.
  • Buffer Preparation: Used to adjust pH in chemical reactions.
  • General Laboratory Use: Suitable for a variety of chemical processes and research.

Safety Considerations:

  • Corrosive Nature: Can cause burns upon contact with skin or eyes.
  • PPE Required: Always wear gloves, goggles, and a lab coat when handling.
  • Storage: Keep in tightly sealed containers to prevent absorption of CO₂ from the air, which can convert NaOH to sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃).
