Why use Scharlau Mannitol Salt Agar?
Scharlau Mannitol Salt Agar
This medium takes advantage of the high saline tolerance of staphylococci, and uses sodium chloride as a selective agent. Only staphylococci and halophilic enterobacteria are able to grow freely at the concentration of salt employed in this medium, while other bacteria are inhibited.

Mannitol salt agar (MSA) is both a selective and differential medium for culturing staphylococci which was originally described by Chapman (1945). The medium is selective because the presence of a high salt concentration (7·5%) suppresses the growth of most bacteria.
