- Read the Manual: Familiarize yourself with the rotary hammer’s user manual before use. Different models may have specific safety instructions and features.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
- Wear safety glasses or a face shield to protect your eyes from flying debris.
- Use hearing protection, as rotary hammers can be loud.
- Wear a dust mask or respirator if drilling or chiseling generates dust or debris.
- Inspect the Tool: Before use, check the rotary hammer for any visible damage or loose parts. Ensure all safety guards and handles are in place and secure.
- Secure Workpiece: Make sure the material you’re working on is securely clamped or anchored to prevent movement during drilling or chiseling.
- Select the Right Tool and Accessories: Choose the appropriate rotary hammer and accessories (bits, chisels) for the task at hand. Ensure they are compatible with the tool and materials.
- Maintain a Firm Grip: Hold the tool with both hands, using the auxiliary handle for stability and control. Keep a firm grip to prevent unexpected movements.
- Keep Hands Clear: Keep your hands, clothing, and jewelry away from the drilling and chiseling area. Do not attempt to clear debris while the tool is running.
- Maintain Proper Body Position:
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart for balance.
- Keep your body to the side of the tool, not directly in line with it.
- Maintain a stable stance to absorb vibrations.
- Control Vibration: Rotary hammers can generate significant vibrations. If prolonged use is anticipated, consider using anti-vibration gloves to reduce hand fatigue.
- Start Slowly: When beginning a hole or chiseling task, start at a low speed and gradually increase it as needed. This provides better control and prevents binding.
- Avoid Overexertion: Let the tool do the work. Apply firm, steady pressure, but don’t force it. Excessive force can lead to loss of control.
- Watch for Kickback: Be prepared for the tool to kick back in the event the bit gets stuck. Maintain a strong grip and a stable stance to control the tool.
- Turn Off When Not in Use: Always turn off the rotary hammer and unplug it (if corded) when not in use. Store it in a safe and dry place.
- Disconnect Power: If the rotary hammer jams or malfunctions, disconnect it from the power source before attempting to troubleshoot or clear the jam.
- Stay Alert: Avoid distractions and maintain your focus on the task. Do not use the tool if you are tired or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Ventilation: When working in confined spaces or areas with poor ventilation, use dust extraction systems or wear appropriate respiratory protection to minimize dust inhalation.
- Training: Ensure that anyone using the rotary hammer is properly trained and understands its operation and safety procedures.
