  4. Place the sand density cone on top of the hole and fill it with sand.
  5. Allow the sand to flow into the hole while keeping track of the volume of sand used.
  6. Measure the mass of the remaining sand in the cone after the test.
  7. Calculate the in-place density of the soil using the volume of the hole and the mass of the sand.
